AbstractA novel 3-dimensional space vector modulation (3DSVM) technique is proposed as the power quality compensator for a 3-phase 4-wired system. The space vectors' allocation in 3-dimensional system and the realization of 3D SVPWM is introduced. Different from 2D SVPWM, there are 8 different vectors corresponding to 8 switching modes in 3D SVPWM. The null vectors can not only reduce the switching losses by optimizing the switching state sequences but also compensate the neutral line current. The 3D SVPWM technique under both under-modulation and over-modulation cases are considered. Both simulation and experimental results are given and compared with conventional hysteresis control strategy. It is showed that the 3D SVPWM technique is validity, and better compensation effect can be obtained under the lower switching frequency.
