A United Multiport Transmitter Front-End for Concurrent Dual-Band Digital Predistortion

Abstract

An eco-friendly and efficient multiport interferometric transmitter architecture is presented in this work to enforce the concurrent dual-band transmission with digital predistortion (DPD). The proposed transmitter front-end is compendious, composed of two identical back-to-back multiport networks driven by only one local oscillator (LO) through a multilayer power divider. Compared to conventional architectures relying on radiofrequency (RF) mixers, our proposal significantly reduces the number of elements, total biasing power, and cost. Moreover, the sole LO source can effectively inhibit the growth of intermodulations between the transmitting path and the DPD feedback path to assure performance. In particular, the proposed architecture harmonizes with existing DPD algorithms to alleviate in-band/cross-band distortion and adjacent channel interference (ACI). The experimental results exhibit excellent predistortion performance in single-band and concurrent dual-band transmissions. For example, the average error vector magnitude (EVM) increases as little as 0.17% with DPD in all studied scenarios compared to the original undistorted signals.
