This book investigates the translation and reception of works by Jorge Amado (1912-2001) in China since the founding of the People´s Republic of China in 1949. Both in Brazilian literary history and in the history of translated literature of China, Jorge Amado is one of the obligatory references. Jorge Amado had been “loved” in China and he is still the most translated Brazilian writer and the figure most important in the diffusion of Brazilian culture in China. The translation of Jorge Amado´s works in China was not determined by a literary criterion, but a political and ideological one. The young Chinese communist government in the 1950s applauded his identity of member of the Communist Party of Brazil and the proletarian position manifested in his works. Due to the socio-historical and cultural reality in China, the translation of his works was not continuous and occurred in three significant moments: the 1950s, the 1980s and the new century, which presented different characteristics. Through a research of social, political, economic and cultural conditions in different historical periods in China, as well as their influences on the activities of translation, this thesis reveals the factors that have manipulated the translation of Jorge Amado´s works in China, highlighting the complex relationships between translation and power, which are ubiquitous at all moments of translation activities in China.
