| Abstract | Ethnopharmacologicalrelevance:RhizomaCurcumae is apopulartypeoftraditionalChinesemedicine whoseessentialoilsarewidelyusedinthetreatmentofcancerinChina.Thisreviewaimsto systematicallysummarizeandanalyzetheanti-cancerpropertiesofterpenoids,themaincomponents of essentialoilsin RhizomaCurcumae, andthusenablethedevelopmentofnewanti-cancerdrugs. Materialsandmethods: Informationontherecentprogressofanti-cancerstudiesonterpenoidsisolated from RhizomaCurcumae, including b-elemene, d-elemene,furanodiene,furanodienone,curcumol,and germacrone,wasgatheredandanalyzed. Results: Among theseterpenoids, b-elemeneisthemostwidelystudied,whereas d-elemene,furano- diene,furanodienone,curcumol,andgermacronehavejustrecentlyattractedtheattentionof researchers.Theanti-cancereffectsoftheseterpenoidsarerelatedtotheretardationofcellcycle arrest,theinductionofapoptosis,andtheinhibitionofmetastasisortissueinvasion,amongothers. Conclusions: Most studieshavefocusedontheinvitrodata,andinvivodataisurgentlyneeded.Further insightintotheanti-canceractivityandthemolecularbasisofthesecompounds,combinedwithefforts in pharmaceuticalchemistryand/orpharmaceutics,willpotentiallyenablethedevelopmentofnew anti-canceragents. |
