Research Contents

Cancer is a complex disease due to its heterogenous nature and multiple cross talk in the cancer regulatory pathways. Treatment outcome of monotherapy is unsatisfactory and drug resistance is common, a holistic intervention strategy is needed. My research focuses on: 1) To investigate cancer drug resistance mechanism using multi-omics technologies. 2) To identify cancer biomarkers to predict targeted therapy and immunotherapy response. 3) To discover novel small molecules and herbal medicines that can tackle cancer drug resistance.

Our goal is to provide better understanding on cancer resistance mechanisms and identify cancer markers and targets to improve treatment outcome.

Dr. Elaine Leung is currently Professor at the Faculty of Health Science, University of Macau. Her main research direction is about the investigation of Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) for the treatment of lung cancer, particularly on the holistic modulation function of TCMs. She is also interested in applying multi-omics technologies for precision oncology. Her research results were published in Nature(outlook), Gut, JAMA Oncology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Briefing in Bioinformatics, Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research, Engineering, Pharmacological Research, Antioxidants and Redox Signaling (ARS), Cell Death and Disease, Cancer Letter etc. She has already published over 150 SCI-E papers and owns 45 international invention patents. She has also registered a TCM ginseng polysaccharide healthcare product and the product has been successfully launched into Phase II clinical trials.

Her research is also well-funded by the Macau Foundation, the Macau Science and Technology Development Fund, and the joint scientific research funding project of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). In 2014 and 2018, she won the first prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education (the fifth ranking position), and the 2018 NSFC-Hong Kong and Macao Scholars Cooperative Research Fund (Overseas outstanding youth). In 2013, she won the Bank of China (Macau) Academic Research Excellence Award, and the second prize of the Macao Science and Technology Natural Science Award (the forth ranking position) in 2014 in Macau. She also serves as the Deputy Editor in Chief of Pharmacological Research (IF 10.334, Q1 interval), which is an internationally renowned pharmacology journal with over 50 years history. At the same time, she also serves as the editorial board member of Engineering (IF 12.834), ARS (IF 7.468), and Stem Cell Review and Reports (IF 6.692).
